If you have spent your entire life living with a chronic illness then you are probably exhausted from the traditional medical process. Doctors appointments, arguments with insurance, and years of medicine that doesn’t have the desired outcome. You feel out of options and are looking for something new.
If this is your situation then you have probably at least once considered medical marijuana. Many of the people who turn to medicinal marijuana do so because traditional medicine has failed to help them, but there is always a hesitancy.
The reason for the hesitancy is due to the stigma that surrounds medicinal cannabis in Florida. The state has some of the harshest marijuana possession laws in the country and it turns many people away, but what everyone needs to realize is those laws only apply to recreational marijuana. Medicinal is very much legal in the state of Florida.
Amendment 2
Voted on in November 2016 and enacted on January 3, 2017, medicinal marijuana in Florida became legal. This legality gave patients that were suffering from chronic and/or debilitating illness the ability to seek out medicinal marijuana as a way to help treat those illnesses.
How does the law work?
The law, while it legalizes medical marijuana, still has guidelines that need to be followed. For example, you need to speak with a medical doctor first to receive a recommendation for medical marijuana. You can’t just go up to a dispensary and purchase medicinal cannabis. Like a prescription medicine, you must first be approved for it by a doctor and receive a medicinal marijuana card.
What does a medicinal card do?
A medicinal marijuana card will allow you access to not only the purchase of medicinal marijuana from dispensaries, but is also your identification in case you are ever questioned for possession of medicinal marijuana.
That said, your card only allows you to possess medicinal marijuana. You may not smoke medicinal cannabis in public and you can not drive while under influence from it. Doing so can lead to heavy fines and even jail time. Always use your medicinal cannabis in the safety of your home.

Who qualifies
In Florida marijuana is only legal medicinally for patients that a doctor feels is in need of medicinal marijuana. Many of these patients are going to have a debilitation condition, such as chronic pain, that prevents them from being able to live their daily life.
While the large majority of these patients will have a debilitation that has a physical effect you can also qualify for medicinal marijuana if you have a debilitation that is on the mental side. Depression, anxiety, and ADHD are all considered qualifiers.
Some other conditions that can qualify for medicinal marijuana include:
- ADHD
- Anorexia
- Anxiety
- Arthritis
- Chronic Pain (any kind)
- Cerebral Palsy
- Chemotherapy Side Effects

If you begin taking medicinal marijuana those debilitations you feel in day to day life may go away. That pain you feel from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep? It is dampened and maybe in some cases completely removed. Medicinal marijuana allows people to take their life back from their chronic illnesses.

It’s far better to do this legally
If you are in Florida and participating in marijuana, but not doing so legally, then the potential downsides far outweigh the gains you are likely having. Not only are you not receiving the best potential marijuana that dispensaries have to offer, but you are risking serious jail time.
In Florida, any amount of marijuana you possess illegally over 20 grams is a felony. If you are found within 1000 feet of a school, college, park, or other specified areas then you can be sentenced to jail for up to 15 years. Even a misdemeanor of 20 grams or less can still lead to a 1-year jail sentence in some cases.
